For photo prints proofing is not usually necessary, since we examine your digital file and make sure the printed colours look realistic. However, getting a good working proof is vital in colour-critical applications, such as where you want prints to match the original painting very closely.
Translating colour from a digital file (such as a photo or scan) onto paper or canvas is not straightforward, so we strongly advise you not to omit proofing. We cannot accept liability for unexpected colour results if you decide to skip this stage.
Are you a long way away from Gloucestershire? I often proof by post, it's quite straightforward.
Bearing all this in mind, if we are printing straight from a digital file without proofing, we will still produce what we consider to be a good-looking print, but colour is very subjective and you may take a different view.
We always proof on the media to be used for final printing, so in colour terms, what you see at the proof stage is exactly what you will get and we like to make sure you're completely happy with the colours before moving to prints. Visit our quality assurance page for more information.
In colour-critical applications it is likely that fine-tuning will be required. We suggest that you examine proofs in natural light or under daylight bulbs – lighting has a huge impact on colour perception.
