photograph of the artistBorn in Tavistock, Devon, in 1948, I developed an interest in the visual arts from a very early age. My conventional education was dominated by one ambition – my desire to pursue my passion for knowledge in the field of painting and drawing.

In 1966 I was admitted to the Plymouth College of Art and Design, which at that time was still under the powerful influence of painting tutors such as the St Ives based painter Alexander Mackenzie who lived and worked with post-war modernist icons such as Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Patrick Heron. The understanding and challenge of artistic representation of natural colour and texture borne from that experience has stayed with me to this day. I moved to London in 1967 to study at Kingston College of Art, graduating in 1970. Later that year I moved to Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, to take up a position as designer for an international leisure company.

I set up a freelance design practice in 1983, specialising in architectural and interior design contracts throughout the UK and abroad. Now semi-retired, I devote more time than was possible in the past to my painting. My work has been shown in various galleries and exhibitions throughout the UK.
